ISAAC AOKI
Seasons with Charlotte Ballet: 1
Originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, Isaac Aoki made his debut at three as a frog in Thumbelina at the University of Utah. He does not remember a time he didn’t love dance. He went on to study at Ballet West Academy, performing yearly in its Nutcracker. He then earned a full scholarship to the Kirov Academy in Washington DC where he studied Russian Vaganova technique. He then successfully auditioned for a full scholarship at the Professional Division program at Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle where he studied for two years and performed with the company.
From the age of 14, he attended programs every summer on scholarship – Kaatsbaan, The School of American Ballet, Miami City Ballet School, Springboard Danse Montreal, and Nederlands Dans Theatre. Isaac was invited to join Grand Rapids Ballet in 2013 by its then new director – Patricia Barker, former principal dancer with Pacific Northwest Ballet. During his time there, he danced contemporary and classical works by George Balanchine, Lar Lubovitch, Jennifer Archibald, Olivier Wevers, and Alejandro Cerrudo. Isaac also originated roles in new creations by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, Penny Saunders, and Robyn Mineko Williams.
While living in Michigan Isaac was also a guest artist with Hubbard Street II, touring to Germany and at Lincoln Center to perform works by Alejandro Cerrudo, Peter Chu, and Bryan Aryias. He has choreographed four ballets since the inception of Grand Rapids Ballet’s Jumpstart series, in which company dancers create their own works. He is most excited to join Charlotte Ballet and become part of the diverse and culturally rich Queen City.

- What inspires you as an artist? I am interdisciplinary – in addition to dance I like watercolor, photography, and film. I took what I learned from studying painting, and from from my dad, who is a professional cinematographer and art photographer. I love taking pictures of dancers, especially in nature. In 2016, I was Grand Rapid’s Artprize 8 first place winner from 1,200 2D entries for a series of 8 photographs featuring dancers in the snow near Lake Michigan. I still can’t believe what good sports they were. I have also directed several dance films.
- What has been a highlight from your time in the dance world? The performance of a short piece I made on Grand Rapids Ballet as a tribute to the contemporary art museum there. I had all the company dancers, trainees, and apprentices in a party line set to Henry Mancini. Everyone was laughing and doing a bit of improv. It was very joyful.
About Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation
At the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation, helping underserved youth and families to beat the odds stacked against them is a number one priority. This is why the MBFF focuses on food security, access to education, and workforce development.
In the game of basketball and, especially in the NBA, stories abound of big accomplishments and beating the odds. One of the most amazing stories would be that of Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues. It was inspiring to watch this 5’3” phenome defend some of the best players in the NBA with a style that awed and amazed any that had the pleasure to watch him.
Most would have doubted Muggsy would ever be able to achieve his dreams, but not Muggsy. Wanting to share his good fortune of overcoming hardships and obstacles and spread his philosophy of “always believe,” Muggsy began his philanthropic efforts by establishing the Muggsy Bogues Family Foundation in 2018. Providing trade based scholarships, hosting annual signature celebrity golf fundraising tournaments and Labor of Love Food distribution events with health and job opportunities to support the mission of collaboration to create equitable, thriving communities where everyone has a shot at a better life.
